How to Make a Basketball Highlight Reel from Phone Clips

A useful basketball highlight starts with footage that makes the play easy to follow. You can begin with a few possessions filmed from the stands; you do not need a whole game or editing experience.
1. Capture the whole play
Keep your athlete in frame, with enough space to see the ball and nearby players. Start before the pass, drive or shot and continue through the outcome. A finish without the setup can hide the decision that made it possible.
Include more than made shots: a rebound, defensive stop, assist or off-ball cut can show a different part of the athlete's game. Avoid zooming so tightly that viewers lose the court context.
2. Upload the clips focused on your athlete
Choose the athlete and basketball when you upload your local video files to NextPlay. Use the My athlete workflow for footage you filmed around that player. The AI cuts the downtime from the footage you provide.
For a wide team recording, use Coach Film and remove the plays that are not your athlete's. NextPlay does not automatically identify one athlete throughout team footage.
3. Review what the viewer can actually see
Watch the finished highlight before sharing. Check that each play starts early enough to understand and ends after the result. Remove clips where the athlete is out of frame or the action is obscured.
If you are preparing a recruiting video, use a Recruiting Highlight for a landscape, muted presentation. Put clearly visible, relevant plays first and follow any format instructions from the recipient.
4. Share the reel or save the MP4
Use the reel's share controls to copy a link or download the MP4. Check the link in a signed-out browser before sending it so you know the recipient can watch.
Keep the original clips too. A short highlight is useful for an introduction; a coach may ask to see more context from a possession or game.
