How to Make a Soccer Highlight Reel from Game Footage

By NextPlay · Updated

A useful soccer highlight shows more than the final touch. Keep enough of the match in frame to show movement, decisions and the result, then choose the plays that represent the athlete's actual role.

1. Film enough of the field

Record horizontally and keep the athlete, ball and nearby options visible. Start before the pass, run, tackle or shot so the viewer can see how the play developed.

For a full match from a fixed or elevated camera, check that the action remains large enough to understand. Editing cannot recover a player or ball that the source never captured clearly.

2. Choose position-relevant moments

Attackers can show movement, chances created, assists and finishes; midfielders can show decisions, progression and recoveries; defenders can show positioning, duels and distribution; goalkeepers can show saves, command and restarts.

Those are examples, not a recruiting formula. Follow the recipient's request and ask the athlete's coach which moments best demonstrate the role at that level.

3. Separate athlete film from team film

Use My athlete for phone footage recorded around one player. For a wide full-match recording, start with Coach Film, review the detected plays and remove the moments that do not belong to the athlete.

Mark the athlete with a circle, arrow or spotlight when a viewer could be unsure who to watch. NextPlay does not automatically identify one player throughout team film from a jersey number.

4. Pick the format and check it

Choose Highlight for family sharing or Recruiting Highlight for a landscape, muted version you can send to coaches yourself. Keep Game Tape when you need every detected play from the match in order.

Watch every clip, test the share link while signed out and keep the original match available if a coach requests full-game context.
