How to Highlight a Player in a Sports Video

By NextPlay · Updated

A viewer should know who to watch before the action starts. A short circle, arrow or spotlight at the beginning of each play can identify the athlete without covering the movement the clip is meant to show.

1. Start with footage where the athlete is visible

Keep enough of the field or court in frame to show the athlete, the ball and the shape of the play. A mark can identify someone who is small in a wide shot, but it cannot recover an athlete who is hidden or outside the frame.

Begin the clip before the action. That gives the viewer time to see the mark, locate the athlete and understand the setup before the play develops.

2. Mark the athlete before the play

In NextPlay, open Play-by-play and choose Mark athlete on this play. Tap the athlete, then choose a circle, arrow or spotlight. Use a clear location on the athlete rather than the ball or another nearby player.

The mark is there to orient the viewer, not to become the video. Preview the play and make sure it appears early enough to help without covering the athlete or an important part of the action.

3. Review every marked clip

Wide team film still needs your judgment. NextPlay does not read a jersey number or automatically decide that every detected play belongs to one athlete. Review each clip and keep only the plays that actually show the athlete you intend to feature.

When tracking evidence is available, the mark can follow the athlete. If the camera cuts, the player is obscured or the tracker is uncertain, the mark safely stays at the point you chose. Watch the finished result before sharing.

4. Use the right finished format

Use Highlight for a shareable athlete reel, Recruiting Highlight for a landscape and muted coach-ready version, or a hand-picked Hype reel for a short vertical social cut. Existing athlete marks carry into those finished versions.

Download the MP4 or copy a share link only after checking that the correct athlete is identified in every included play.

Questions

Should I mark the athlete in every clip?

Mark each clip where a viewer could reasonably be unsure who to watch. A tight phone clip focused on one athlete may not need a mark; wide team footage usually does.

Can NextPlay identify my athlete by jersey number?

No. NextPlay cuts every play for the whole field and does not track a player or read jersey numbers. Mark athlete lets you tap your athlete on any play — circle, arrow or spotlight — and the mark is burned into the downloaded video. Film that follows one player (phone footage, a Trace or Veo player view) keeps them in more of the clips. Team plans can use roster numbers to suggest which athlete each play belongs to.

Which mark should I use?

Choose the least distracting option that makes the athlete obvious. Preview a circle, arrow and spotlight against your footage, then keep the one that remains clear without covering the play.

Do athlete marks appear in the downloaded video?

Yes. Marks are burned into the finished video, and existing marks carry into a hand-picked Hype reel made from those clips.
